The Old Billygoat
Marco Polo

Healthy over 6,000 years

Marco Polo, and his family, were reknown for many things.  One of them was trading in spices from India and China.  Traveling from Europe through the Sinai peninsula through the Indus valley past the Himalayas to the Pacific coast and down to Burma was not a short trip.  His travels lasted circa 1271-1295.  Such trips would be for valuable reasons such as wealth, knowledge, trade, religion and the like.  Spices were in that list, not because they tasted good, but because they were medicine.

Archeological and historical research find various ancient evidence of primarily Indian spices being used more than 6,000 years ago and being traded with many other cultures.

By the way, the Vedas ("knowledge") are a large body of knowledge texts originating in the ancient Indian subcontinent.  Composed by ancient Aryans in Vedic Sanskrit, the texts constitute the oldest layer of Sanskrit literature and the oldest scriptures of Hinduism, dating more than 1,500 years ago.

The further back we push our understanding of the existance of man the further we also date the use of spices.

With finds like Göbekli Tepe, we know the man has been building since 8,000BC (10,000 years ago), so that means spices have probably been used that long, or as we say “over 6,000 years”.

Sadly, we probably will not find much evidence beyond 12,000 years ago because the end of the last ice age literally scraped evidence from the surface of Earth.  But there is still hope because we also find underground and underwater cities.

Spices have been helping keep man alive and healthy, so for how long has man been using spices?  Long enough for you to consider their immense value.
