Turmeric is anti-inflammatory and more to the point is curcumin.  Curcumin is a 5% portion of turmeric.  The research regarding curcumin and treating many ailments is phenomenal.  Professor Bharat B Aggarwal seems to be leading this research.

Aggarwal wrote a book "Healing Spices", which is a good resource for health benefits of spices.

Not all curry is created equal.  Curry is a generic term to denote a variety of spices. 
The selection of spices in curry is a matter of region or family preference.
 

Turmeric (& other spices) is activated by black pepper.

Curcumin (extract of Turmeric) can combat more than 70 health issues including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s.  In cancer studies, large doses of Curcumin are being used to treat cancer with 35 times better results than expensive drugs.


Coriander soothes irritable bowel syndrome, eases chronic constipation, helps reduce redness in eczema, psoriasis, rosacea.
 
Cinnamon helps control blood sugar problems. 

Studies indicate that, in India, the spices, and amount used, account for significantly lower incidence of chronic illness, even curative.
